This paper focuses on model of a photovoltaic cell. This model is based on mathematical equations and is described through an equivalent circuit including a photocurrent source, a diode, a series resistor and a shunt resistor. Single diode model is employed to investigate the characteristics curves of PV cell. The effect of irradiation and temperature on mono crystalline, poly crystalline and thin film modules is also considered. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on Perturb and Observe method is used to reach the maximum output power. The accuracy of the simulation is verified by applying the model to JC250M-24/Bb solar module. In this work a complete comparison between mono crystalline, poly crystalline and thin film modules has been reported for the first time. The maximum output power is obtained for mono crystalline silicon and the thin film technology had the least output power. This work guides the optoelectronic engineers to choose the proper PV cells for a specific application.
