Abstract:

Remote camera trapping allows for the detection and monitoring of elusive wildlife, particularly of carnivores, without their physical capture and handling. We targeted all medium- to large-sized carnivores believed to occur in Naibandan Wildlife Refuge in central area of Iran. We analyzed the results of 7 different times camera trapping in the study area during 5 years (2002-2007). The studies consisted of a total of 10789 trap nights. We summarized the total number of photographs taken, identifiable animal in photographs (events). We calculated trap success as the number of trap events per 1000 trap-nights. Then we compared trap success of carnivores. Activity data were obtained from stations. For activity patterns we calculated the absolute number of captures occurring during night or day. Results of the study showed Hyaena had the highest trap success among carnivores (9.5/1000 TN). Cheetah was second highest (4.7/1000 TN). Caracal, Cheetah and Jackal were nocturnal and diurnal in this area but for Striped Hyaena, Blanford fox, Red fox and Sand fox, activity was significantly biased toward night. Blanford Fox had the highest proportion (97.5%) of nocturnal activity in the area
