Abstract:
Pragmatic strategies involve procedures taken by a translator or interpreter to transfer a usually culture-specific translation item into a second language. This paper focuses on pragmatic strategies in simultaneous interpretation with amajor purpose: to see whether the nine pragmatic strategies of Chesterman‟s model (1997) are used similarly in slowand fast modes of speech delivery; that is, to see whether use of pragmatic strategies is speed-dependent. A total of 20PhD students of translation studies were selected by census. They interpreted part of a political speech originally delivered in an international occasion in either fast or slow delivery modes. Findings indicate that the strategies were used in both speed modes. However, there was no significant association between delivery speed and use of the strategies
