The relationship between willingness to communicate and intrinsic motivation of Iranian intermediate learners of English abstract
The present study aimed to examine the potential relationship between willingness to communicate (WTC) and intrinsic motivation among Iranian intermediate learners studying teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) as their academic major. This study was based on a hybrid framework of the second language willingness to communicate (L2 WTC) model and the self-determination theory (SDT) as the motivational framework. To this end, 133 intermediate TEFL learners, who were selected among 164 ones through administering a proficiency test, were required to fill out a questionnaire for measuring their L2 WTC and language learning motivation. To explore the possible effect of intrinsic motivation on L2 WTC correlational analysis was conducted. The results indicated that intrinsic motivation is positively and significantly related to L2 WTC. It was found that intrinsic motivation accounted for a medium proportion of variation in L2 WTC.
