Modeling of Microbial Fuel and Electrolysis Cells Based on the Bioanode Potential Conditions abstract

Two major types of microbial electrochemical cells are microbial fuel cell and microbial electrolysis cell. In present study we governed the meodeling of these systems by concentrating on the simulation ofbioelectrochemical reactions in both biofilm and anolyte. The simulation of microbial fuel and electrolysis cellscan be described by shifting the bioanode surface potential boundary conditions. The presented model wasvalidated by the experimental results from a microbial fule cell fed with cheese whey wastewater and then it was switched to a supposed microbial electrolysis cell. The effect of applied voltage as well as poising the cathodesurface potential on the anode surface potential and microbial popultaion have been acquired. The results showthat hydrogen production rate increases at the higher applied voltage and cathode potential, but the influence of cathode potential at the applied volatge of 0.9 V was much more tangible. This means that better evaluation to obtain the optimum hydrogen production can be estimated by an appropriate model
