Abstract:

This paper presents the speed control of a permanent magnet direct current (PMDC) motor. The drive system of the mentioned motor is based on a full bridge (H-bridge) DC-DC converter (chopper) that is controlled in closed loopwith two methods. The first procedure utilizes PI control by Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) switching technique andthe other one applies a novel carrier-based with unipolar switching technique Hysteresis Current Control (HCC). Themodel of the proposed motor, chopper and controllers are presented. The proposed topologies were simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software package and the results were obtained, shown, and discussed. Results show that the hysteresis current control has lower torque ripple than PI controller, therefore makes it more appropriate in electric vehicle (EV) applications
