ON THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SELF-MOTIVATION AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AMONG LEARNERS IN DIFFERENT AGES IN DIFFERENT ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY LEVELS abstract
This study was an attempt to find out the possible correlation between self-motivation and English language proficiency among subjects at different ages. To find out about 47 students from different language institutes were selected randomly. The subjects included both male and female students at different ages with intermediate language proficiency. An already standardized self –motivation quiz was borrowed from one well-known psychology institute in internet site. To test the language proficiency a test from a standardized test book at the subject s level of proficiency was developed. This test included three language components (vocabulary-grammar-reading). Having administered the quiz and the test at the same time we did data analysis through spss default. The results to our surprise showed negative correlations among different groups and in some few groups revealed a weak amount of correlation between the groups. Our null hypotheses in most cases were rejected except in some female groups which showed very weak amount of correlation between these two constructs (language proficiency and self –motivation).
