The Comparative Effect of Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies and Collaborative Strategic Reading on EFL Learners Reading Comprehension abstract

The present study investigated the comparative impact of Reading Comprehension Strategies (RCS) and Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on EFL learners reading comprehension. For this purpose, 62 students, whose scores fell between one standard deviation below and above the mean, were selected through a piloted Preliminary English Test (PET).They were randomly assigned into two experimental groups of 31: Reading Comprehension Strategies Group received the treatment based on Reutzel and Cooter s Model (2012), Collaborative Strategic Reading Group received the treatment based on Klingner, Vaughan, & Schumm s Model (2001). Both experimental groups were given a piloted pre and post reading section of the PET. Based on the results of T-test, the CSR group has significantly outperformed the RCS group in terms of reading comprehension scores. Thus, teachers can provide the students with CSR based on the elements of the reading text. Also, syllabus designers can train teachers to apply CSR components practically.
