Abstract:
As a method of textual analysis, deconstructioninvolves close reading of works of differenttypes to reveal incompatibilities between theexplicit and implicit planes of discourse andlimitless interpretation of meaning in a text.Because of the hierarchy that Frost sets up, TheRoad Not Taken is an ideal piece fordeconstructive analysis. This paper is ananalysis and a breaking down of this poem intoits various elements and a close examination ofthose elements, especially the elements thatmost need examination because of thedifficulties, ambiguities, or problems that theypose. It is revealed through this analysishow the poem can be approached from adeconstructive point of view that requiresmoving beyond individual phrases. Thepoem’s overt ideological project rests onsome binary oppositions that can bedeconstructed by contradictory textualevidence, that conflict with or underminethese hierarchies. It is hoped that the resultsof the current analysis may offer some freshinsight into the poem and shed some light onthe appreciation of it from a differentperspective, which is based on deconstructingthe poem.
