Abstract:

Chitosan is a collective name for a group of partially and fully deacetylated chitin Compounds. Tissue engineering is an important therapeutic strategy for present and future medicine. Recently, functional biomaterial researches have been directed towards the development of improved scaffolds for regenerative medicine. Chitosan is a natural polymer from renewable resources, obtained from shell of shellfish, and the wastes of the seafood industry. One of the most important factors in any tissue-engineering application is the cell substrate. Chitosan scaffolds having an interconnecting porous structure were easily fabricated by simple freezing and lyophilization of a chitosan solution. Chitosan is used in tissue engineering of bone, cartilage, vessels and other tissues. Chitosan is also used to treatment of cancer and skin regeneration in addition to tissue engineering. Chitosan has anti-oxidant and anti-microbial effects. In this a review article is studied of the general characteristics of chitosan and its various uses including tissue engineering.
