A kinetics study of methylene blue adsorption from aqueous solution on carbon nanotube abstract

In this work, Batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of basic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solutions using carbon nanotube (CNT). The MB removal efficiency was evaluated using UV-Vis Spectrophotometery at 660 nm. the sorption kinetic data were analysed using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intraparticle diffusion models. It was found that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the best applicable model to describe the sorption kinetics. The effects of major variables governing the efficiency of the process such as, dye concentration, CNT dosage and pH were investigated. As the initial dye concentration increased, the dye removal efficiency decreased. The amount adsorbed increased with the CNTs dosage; however, the removal percentage initially increased with the CNTs dosage and then constanted as the CNTs dosage increased further. The dye removal using 200 mg/L of CNT was more than 99%. This dosage (200 mg/L) was considered as the optimum dosage of CNT to remove MB. Results of batch experiments showed that this adsorbent exhibited high sorption capacities toward basic dyes.
