Impression creep behavior of Al/SiC nanocomposite abstract
In the present study, aluminum reinforced with 3.5, 4, and 5 volume percent of nano silicon carbide particles were synthesized using the powder metallurgy route of blending, compaction and sintering. The results showed that addition of 4 volume percent of silicon carbide to Al results in higher creep rates and thus lower creep resistance. This was attributed to the dispersive distribution of the nano silicon carbide particles in the composite and less porosities than others. Next, in the present study, a connection with the creep results was obtained from impression tests. Results showed a relating constant coefficient between impression and compression creep rates. Also, according to the relaxation results, the variations in the steady state relaxation rate were sensible because of the different nano reinforcement distribution and the porosities.
