Over the past few years, Grid computing has become an increasingly hot topic in the world of new technologies. It is gradually also becoming familiar to the mass public through scientific and industrial field trials. Grid computing has been adopted and is used by academia and industry due to its high potential for improving manageability,utilizations, and performance of geographically distributed and diverse resource centers. During 2008 and 2009 commercial interest shifted from grids to clouds , with the availability of several on-demand compute and storage resources. The integration of grid and cloud technology provides new revenue streams for Telecom operators through their converged fixed, mobile and data services from their Next Generation Network (NGN) and by offering Grid and cloud computing data services reusing the current deployed NGN infrastructure. Carrier-grade networks of the future are currently being standardized and designed under the umbrella name of Next Generation Network(NGN). The goal of NGN is to provide a more flexible network infrastructure that supports not just data and voice traffic routing, but also higher level services and interfaces for third party enhancements. This in paper, opportunities to integrate grid and cloud computing strategies and standards into NGN are considered. The importance of standardized interfaces and interoperability testing demanded by carrier-grade networks are discussed.
