Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients who received radiation therapy are at risk of developing side effects such as radiogenic second cancers. The aim of this study was to examine the dose to the breast after craniospinal irradiation(CSI) deliverd with x-ray therapy to contribute to understanding of the specific screening needs of this population.METHODS AND MATERIAL: Studies from MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and CINAHL(1966-2013) RESULTS: There were many studies that had compared proton therapy CSI with photon therapy CSI .In all of them the received dose to the breast tissues was near zero after proton therapy to the spine. In contrast, after photon treatment to the spine, the average maximum and mean photon doses were 20-26 GY and 3- 6GY respectively.(p≤0.0001) CONCLUSIONS:Not only after chest irradiation we need to screen for detecting breast cancer, but also after craniospinal irradiation(CSI) with photon the mentioned plan must be done.
