Effect of Pavement condition on Traffic performance abstract
Deterioration of pavement has significantly affects on traffic performance. Maintenance and rehabilitation of these pavements to the desired level of serviceability and to regulate the traffic speed is one of the challenging problems faced by pavement engineers and administration in the highway sector. Pavement Condition Index (PCI), have been commonly used to assign a maintenance strategy for the existing pavements. The present paper is an effort in to the similar direction; it not only develops a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) but also relates it to the traffic performance parameter (speed) for the selected road in Karachi. The study area consists of 520 road segment constituting 25 (m) each. The methodology includes identification of different types of distresses from selected sections, to develop programmed Excel™ templates to use distress data and directly calculate the PCI for various test sections and to develop a regression model between PCI and speed with respect to the ASTM Standard PCI rating scale. The developed PCI conclude that out of 520 sections 362 were in a good condition. The developed regression models for each ASTM standard rang helps in selecting the maintenance strategy, and to predict the speed for the deteriorated pavement section.
