Fabrication of zinc oxide/polyrhodanine nanoparticles using chemical oxidation polymerization and their antibacterial properties abstract

This work describes the synthesis of zinc oxide/polyrhodanine (ZnO/PRh) nanocomposites and their antibacterial activity. Polymerization of polyrhodanine initiated via Ag+ ions as initiator. During oxidization of rhodanine monomer, the silver ions (Ag+) were reduced to silver nanoparticles; consequently, ZnO/PRh nanocomposites were formed. The ZnO/PRh nanocomposite exhibited excellent antibacterial activity toward gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and gram positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, ZnO/PRh nanocomposite could potentially be used as an antibacterial agent.
