Abstract:
Transition zones are track parts where the stiffness of bedding changes considerably in a short distance. When there is an abrupt change in the superstructure construction, so variations in the stiffness which results rail deflections cannot be avoided. In this paper, a new simplified numerical method is presented for modeling of differential settlement in the longitudinal section by using Finite Element Method. For this purpose, PLAXIS2D software is used for calculating the settlement induced by train load in the transition zone. Rail is modelled as a beam element, and train load is equal in dynamic harmonic wave as a variable distributed load on traverses. Increasing the flexural stiffness of rail system is considered as a solution to reduce the settlement thereof. The results of numerical modeling show it is suitable to use double track system in order to reduce the differential settlement in the transition zone of railway projects
