Investigation of influence of structural defects on elastic modules in graphene sheets abstract

The attitude of variation of elastic modules with respect to the different states of presence of the vacancy defects in graphene sheets is explored in this paper, via structural mechanics approach using a full nonlinear mass–spring model. Detailed investigation is performed about the effect of defects locations, the distance between two adjacent defects, number of defects and defects distribution on the Young and shear modules of layers. For the same number of defects, the effects of defects gathering in an area or the way they are scattered in the sheet are examined. It is observed that the effect of defects on the shear module could be affected by a change in the location of the defects. By increasing the separation distance of two adjacent defects, Young s and shear modules show totally different behaviors. It is also obtained that Young s module is more affected by the presence of distributed vacancies, while the attitude of impressibility of shear modulus depends on the number of defects
