Abstract:

In this research, the metallic pressure pipe rehabilitation using polymeric composite patch has been studied by finite element method. The effect of defect shapes, the size and mechanical properties of putty and the liner as an interface between the composites and the surface of the metallic pipe and finally the lay-up of applied laminatedcomposites have been studied. The results indicate that at the same area, the defect shape could affect the amounts and distribution of applied stress in the damaged pipe. In addition, the composite patch length and thickness should be designed based on the defect size and applied internal pressure. It was found that there is an optimum length that the induced stress is minimized. However, by increasing the thickness of composite patch, the stress in the pipe and composites decreased. Finally, the filler should be applied at an enough thickness.
