Preparation of Walkability Criteria based on Urban Design Qualities abstract
This paper attempted to measure the visual quality of urban spaces in developing several walkability criteria. Accordingly, this study involved five qualitative measures of urban design in terms of physical characteristics, including imageability, enclosure, human scale, transparency and complexity. The main objective of this study was to measure the quality of urban spaces through operational definitions, test their interrelationships with corresponding behaviors to walkability, and finally develop several criteria for walkability. The results of this study demonstrated certain traces of urban design qualities in the review of several successful urban design examples based on the principles of walkability associated with the components of place. Nevertheless, it is difficult to precisely measure the extent to which details have been involved. It is desirable to explore this issue and consider it as a living organism in urban design literature.
