Abstract:
Background and Objective: Behavioral countermeasures before coronary angiography would be advantageous because of the side effects of antidepressant drugs, but few alternative treatments are available. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of controlled breathing on the anxiety level of patients undergoing coronary angiography. Materials and Methods: This Quasi-experimental study was conducted on 70 patients admitted to cardiac wards before angiography in Shahid Sadoughi Hospital, Yazd, Iran. Samples were randomized convenience sampling and divided into two groups of control (n=35) and intervention (n=35). All subjects in the intervention group tested under trained controlling breathing less than 20 minutes before the angiography for 10 minutes and also use this breathing throughout the angiography. whereas the usual care of ward was provided for the control group. Data were collected by using Spielberger questioner immediately before the intervention and immediately after the angiography through interviews with all both controlled breathing and control groups. Findings: Mean (± SD) anxiety score before the onset of controlling breathing was significantly decreased (p < .01) for controlling breathing (10.75.6 min) and compared with control (9.2 ± 5.9 min). Conclusions: controlling breathing a provided significant protection against anxiety level. This non-pharmacologic countermeasure could be used as an effective method to alleviate anxiety in patients.; however, they are easy to implement and free of side effects.
