Investigating the role of spoken language on the perceptual evaluation results based on the GRBAS scale

Background and Objective.Any disorders in the respiratory system and the vocal tract can induce voice disorders. Identifying and evaluating these disorders is an introduction to the onset of treatment. Perceptual evaluation based on the GRBAS scale reports each person s sound quality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of spoken language on the perceptual evaluation results based on the GRBAS scale.Materials and Methods.In order to employ this study, 40 voice samples with disorders were used in both Persian and Japanese. The tasks of voice samples include prolongation 6 vowels, counting and reading the text. These samples were provided to 15 evaluators with over 5 years of clinical experience in the field of voice disorders for the evaluation of samples. In each voice sample group, 5 samples were repeated. Each evaluator was asked to do a perceptual assessment of the samples, and additionally determine which task represents the diagnosis of the disorder. The correct answer for each sample was determined based on the specific score of the Japanese samples and the agreement of scores of the Persian samples.Finding.The results show that the highest and lowest percent of the correct response rate of perceptual evaluation were respectively in the Grade(G) and Roughness (R) in Japanese samples and in the Grade (G) and Asthenia (A) in the Persian samples. The degree of recognition of the evaluators in both voice samples represents the highest degree of recognition in the text reading task, then prolongation of the six vowels and, finally, the count. The amount of similar response of each evaluator to similar samples is greater in Persian samples than Japanese ones.Conclusion.Perceptual evaluations, such as the GRBAS scale, play a significant role in determining the severity of the disorder and, subsequently, the adoption of appropriate therapeutic approaches. Cultural and linguistic factors influence the results of this perceptual scale and scoring.
