Abstract:

The performance of drilling operation is primarily evaluated based on the hole quality indices and the tool cost per unit hole that are related to cutting forces. Prediction of cutting forces for any set of cutting conditions is essential in optimal design and manufacturing of drilled products and associated fixtures. This paper aims at the assessment of mechanistic modeling of cutting forces and torque in drilling process using conventional twist drill. Different steps in the development of a mechanistic model for drilling process and its validation for the combination of Al 2024-T3 workpiece material and High Speed Steel (HSS) drill bits are presented. The extrapolative and interpolative capabilities of the developed model for drilling process and its accuracy in determining cutting and thrust forces in turning are also investigated
