Abstract:

In recent years, the utilization of Metal Matrix Composites MMC materials in many engineering fields has undergone a tremendous increase. Accordingly the need for accurate machining of composites has increased enormously. However, from the knowledge acquired machining methods used for conventional metals are not suitable for the composites. In the present work, the surface roughness of Al-SiC (MMCs) has been studied by machining the composite by PCD insert 1500 grade under various machining conditions. The data is collected and tested by using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The worn out tool is also analyzed under Optical/Scanning microscope and the parameters are correlated with ANN and ANOVA. The result provides useful information.
