The Structural System, Architectonic Features and the Architectural Expression of a Building

It has been long recognised that an appreciation of the role of structure is essential to the understanding of architecture and the state of architectural expression on the users due to the architectural concept and idea of a building. This article is aimed to stress the impotance of the integrity of these two concepts through analyzing ten selected cases. and the interrelationship between the architectonic features and the structure of a building. The main objective of this study is to bold the role of technology in architecture and the collaboration between structural engineers and architects and to answer to these questions that say how the structural system can express the architectural concept (or idea) of a building and why there is an urgent need of taking the structural system into consideration in terms of the design process of the creation of a building. Due to the modality of the research, ten case studies have been selected based on the reseach objectives. Through case study reseach method, cases have been analyzed and categorized. Methods of this study, due to its modality, is the combination of Descriptive - Analytical method and Case Study. The method of data collection is Library studies. The method of data analysis is a Comparison of ten selected cases based on Deductive Logic. Some architectonic features will be analyzed among ten selected cases from all over the contemporary architectural works. In this article the necessity of this subject will be described, then the methods and cases through some figures, tables and diagrams will be presented, analyzed, discussed and concluded. The comparison criteria such as the importance of structural elements in aesthetics of the architecture, the impact of technical requirements on the form and the integrity of form and structure, ... are discussing among the cases. The results shows that there is an urgent relevance between choosing a proper structural system and the architectural expression of a building. Thus The proper selection of the structural system of a building is not only effective in the technical aspects of the construction process of a building, but is also merely urgent in the expression of what has been called the concept or the idea in terms of architecture. It puts an effective impact on the users. In this regard, the structural system selection should be considered in the earliest stages of the design process of a building in order to express the concepts.
