Determination of Clinical Prognostic Factors on the Survival of Patients with Gastric Cancer in Yazd Province using Multivariate Analysis; a survival study

Background: Cancers are one of the most lethal factors in the world. Of these, gastric cancer is one of the most important cancers worldwide. This study was aimed to determine the clinical prognostic factors on the survival of patients with gastric cancer in Yazd province, Iran. Materials and Methods: This is an observational (the analytical type) study which has been conducted using the methods of longitudinal and survival study conducted on 136 patients who have been diagnosed with gastric cancer living in Yazd province during 2005 to 2008. The sample of this study was collected using census method. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 and STSTA version 12, Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards model. Results: In this study, 66.9% of patients were men and 33.1% were women. The survival probability of patients for 1, 3 and 5 years was estimated 61.3, 31.2 and 24.5%, respectively. The cox proportional hazards model showed that the blood group, therapeutic interventions, chronic disease, and the interval between the first symptom and the diagnosis had a significant relationship with the patient s survival, so that the adjusted risk ratio for death in cancer patients with chronic disease was 10.36 time higher than cancer patients without chronic disease as well as the adjusted risk ratio for delayed diagnosis was 10.47 times higher than timely diagnosis. Conclusion: Although the survival rate of patients with gastric cancer in Yazd province was at the optimum level, but, it can be increased using some interventions, and there was no significant relationship between the use of narcotics with the survival of cancer patients.
