Intercritical Annealing Response of AISI 4130 Steel abstract
The intercritical annealing response of AISI 4130 steel was investigated. With increasing theintercritical annealing temperature, the volume fraction of martensite increased. At low martensitefractions, some improvement in tensile strength was achieved with maintaining the ductile fracturebehavior. However, at high martensite fractions, as the carbon content of the AISI 4130 steel isrelatively high, brittle behavior characterized by the cleavage facets on the fracture surface and theabsence of necking was observed. It was concluded that intercritical annealing at low temperaturesmight be helpful to enhance the mechanical properties of this important medium carbon steel.
