Abstract:
This study provides the results of energy benchmarking analysis and energy consumption and CO2 emission forecasting through four scenarios based on production growth rate and energy efficient technologies level in cement sector of Iran up to 2050. The 16 studied cement companies including 23 production lines have been benchmarked together and, with international best available technology (BAT) both in process level and whole production line, thus allowing for estimating energy saving potentials. Results of this study indicated that the energy saving potential will be between 7 to 61% compared to international BAT in terms of final energy. Final energy consumption demand will be 88.4 PJ lower in 2050 when highest scenario of penetration rate and production growth is applied instead of lowest scenario. With a high growth in cement production, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission could be as high as 106.3 Million tons CO2 with no further intervention of energy efficient technologies; however with a high penetration rate of energy efficient technologies, 11% reduction in CO2 emission is achievable.Substitution of clinker with more additives in cement production, can bring to the attention of policy makers in order to support further reduction in CO2 emission
