The Effect of Zingiber Officinale extract on Hela Cervical Cancer Cells Apoptosis

Introduction: Cancer is a complex and life-threatening illness that is associated with the uncontrolled division of cells, escape from apoptosis and metastases, and is often caused by genetic and environmental disorders. Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer and the fourth cause of death due to cancer among women in the world, accounting for more than 80% of deaths by cancer in developing countries. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Zingiber Officinale on Hela cancer cells.Methods: Hela cells were seeded and treated with 1200, 1600 and 2000 μg/ml concentrations of Zingiber Officinale extract for 1, 3 and 5 days. Cell viability was evaluated on certain days after treatment. We used MTT assay to confirm cell viability. The absorbance of plates was measured at 570 nm using an ELISA reader. Also, Giemsa staining was used to detect apoptosis.Results: We observed a significant change in cell viability of treated cells with Zingiber Officinale extract. Giemsa staining confirmed apoptotic morphology in treated cells.Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude that Zingiber Officinale extract had an anticancer effect on Hela cells.
