Synthesis and Modification of UTSA-16 to a Ni-Co bimetallic MOF and its Application in CO2 Capture

Abstract:

Mixed metal MOFs, including Open-Metal Sites (OMS), are the most promising materials for increasing the tendency toward CO2 capture. UTSA-16 is an appropriate MOF with great portion of OMSs, which would display repeatable and reversible CO2 sorption. In this study, UTSA-16 was synthesized and then partially substitution of Co+2 centers of UTSA-16 with Ni+2 was fulfilled with 20% Ni with the aim of increasing CO2 uptake. Synthesized UTSA-16 and bi-metallic Ni-UTSA- 16 were characterized by XRD, FESEM, EDS, elemental mapping and BET analyses. Experimental isotherm adsorption studies have shown the following trend for CO2 adsorption capacity: Ni-UTSA- 16 > UTSA-16. In addition, Ni-UTSA-16 bi-metallic MOF exhibited lower isosteric heat of adsorption compared to the UTSA-16 (ΔHave=33.99 vs. 42.58 kj/mol). This feature enables us to propose an economic adsorbent (Ni-UTSA-16) to the industry as a candidate for separation of CO2 from natural gas.
