GIS-based modeling of the effects of flood wall on water level abstract
Flood which causes by storms is a significant topic among the natural disasters in likely all countries. Although mostly heavy falls considered as reasons for this phenomenon, it’s deniable to inducing it by poor managed constructions on riverain areas. Due to the expected growth and civilization along the rivers or however in catchments, watershed studies are needed to simulate current and future hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics to determine, prevent and solve the flood problems and also plan for future developments. The changes of water level in upstream hydrologic station of Karoon River in Iran-Ahvaz due to the changes of cross sections caused by flood walls at margins have been modeled in this study. This model is a forecasting system for future construction to show the critical level of it to cause raising water level at upstream. This forecasting model was made by integrating River Analysis System from Hydrologic Engineering Center of U.S. Army Corps (HEC-RAS) and Geographic Information System (GIS), interfacing by one of the GIS extensions named HEC-GeoRAS. The model has been calibrated and shows significant hazard in case adding flood walls on 30 km length.
