Abstract:
Cellophane membrane is a polysaccharide membrane which makes of regenerated cellulose. Cellophane membrane is a hydrophilic membrane although, it is insoluble in water, thus this property of cellophane membrane causes that it uses in different industries. However, these membranes have disadvantages such as short operation life time, low oxidative resistance and due to the existence of hydroxyl group and vicinal hydroxyl groups Also, low resistance in alkali hydrolysis. In this study, cellophane membrane properties were improved by graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as a redox initiator. As a result, the surface of cellophane membrane was changed chemically and morphologically. These changes were Investigated by means of ATR-FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, and also the surface properties were studied by contact angle and water absorption. In addition to, oxidative degradation, ionic permeability and gravimetric methods were measured. The results showed that the salt permeability of the modified membrane was suitable and oxidative resistance was increased
