DNA-binding study of a novel quinolone derivative, by UV-Vis spectroscopy abstract

Quinoline derivatives have important pharmacological and biochemical properties, including anticancer and antimutagenic activities. Some anticancer and antitumor drugs interact with DNA and cause a disturbance in DNA replication and transcription and lead to cell death. In this work the interaction of novel quinoline derivative, (8,8-dimethyl-10-[2-(piperazine-1-yl) ethy]-5-(thiophen-2-yl)-8,9-dihydropyrimido[4,5-b]quinoline-2,4,6 (1H,3H,5H,7H,1OH)-trione) with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopic method. The results showed that the quinoline derivative can interact with CT-DNA. The hypochromism in the UV-Visible spectrum in the presence of DNA suggested the interaction of the compound and DNA probably in an intercalation mode.
