Abstract:

Network-on-chip (NoC) has been proposed as an efficient approach for on-chip communication in highly complicated systems with a lot of processing blocks. One of the important factors that reduce the performance of the network on chip is congestion. Because, unbalanced data packet distribution results in increasing latency and power consumption of the whole NoC. In addition, unbalanced load may cause packet lost increasing, then the network throughput decreasing. Routing algorithms are responsible for the on-chip communication, load balancing and traffic distribution through the network. Hence, designing efficient and high-performance routing algorithms is essentially important. In this paper, we propose a low overhead turn-based routing algorithm for both unicasting and multicasting in wormhole-switched 2D mesh NoC architectures. The proposed routing scheme is adaptive and deadlock-free with fuzzy-based load controller. The simulation results in terms of throughput, latency and power consumption indicate the better performance of the proposed method in comparison with the existing routing methods
