Explaining the Components of Family Social Capital Affecting Social Health: Qualitative Content Analysis Based on Adolescent Experiences abstract

Background: Family social capital, which is a source of family power, is strongly related to health. By increasing communication in the network of social interactions within the family, the conditions of family cohesion are provided and the health of the members of the family increased. Family social capital affects the ability, decision-making and social function of adolescents. It also changes the pressure of friends, the pressure of interactions in the virtual space and social performance, consequently, the social health of adolescents is changed. The aim of this study was to understand components of family social capital affecting social health in adolescents in Mashhad, Iran.Methods: This qualitative study was carried out using conventional content analysis method. Participations of the study were 47 girls and boys adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old who were selected based on the purposive sampling of 12 schools in different social and economic locations in Mashhad, Iran. Data were collected through 4 groups of 5-7 adolescences. After implementing the interview text, the data were analyzed using MAXQDA10 software.Results: The category of family social capital was extracted with two sub-category: Comprehensive family support and network of family relationships . The comprehensive family support, derived from emotional support , financial support and consultative support . The network of family relationships, resulted from the quantity and quality of family relations .Discussion: According to the experiences of participants, family social capital provides a suitable conditions for adolescent social health through family support and family relationships. It is recommended to pay special attention to role of family social capital in programs and interventions to promoting social health among adolescents.
