Abstract:
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), the collection of CO2 from industrial sources and its injection underground, could contribute significantly to reductions in atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gases. Possible sites for injection include coal beds, deep saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs. In this work, we focus on CO2 storage in aquifers because aquifers have the greatest storage potential. A simulation study was conducted in a commercial software in order to determined optimum reservoir properties and highest injection rate provided that bottom hole pressure never reach to fracture pressure. The results show that porosity and permeability are dominating factors whilst perforation interval has minimum effect. Reservoir heterogeneity also plays an important role in total gas trapping and mainly depends on the capillary pressure and relative permeability heterogeneity.
