Abstract:
Biofuels are identified as a potential solution to prevent the reduction of fossil fuel reserves, increasing oil prices, and providing a clean and renewable energy source. The major problem for the commercialization of biofuels is the complex conversion process and their supply chain. This paper is developed a multi-period hybrid generation biomass-to-biofuel supply chain considering environmental dimensions of sustainability. The objective is to maximize biofuel producers profit with practical constraints including the biomass supply, the capacity of facilities, storage and GHG emissions. To illustrate the capability of the proposed model, we applied the model to the biomass-derived liquid fuel supply system of the southern region of Iran. We consider wheat and wheat stem as first and second-generation of feedstocks for biodiesel production in the studied case. Sensitivity analyses show the available biomass can have a significant impact on the profitability of this supply chain. The acquired results demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the proposed model in designing biodiesel supply chain.
