Index properties of clays contaminated with organic fluids abstract
Soils are being contaminated by human industrial activities. Soil contamination is not only an environmental challenge but also is a geotechnical problem. Contamination of soils affects its physical and geotechnical properties. Changes in behavior may be more obvious in clays due to their chemical origin. In current study, a series of index tests like liquid limit, plastic limit and compaction tests performed to evaluate the influence of kerosene on physical properties of two kinds of clays with low and high plasticity. Two kinds of clays, i.e. Kaolinite and Bentonite selected for this purpose. Kerosene added to the base soil in three different percentages of 3, 6 and 9. The result shows that addition of kerosene to clay increases its liquid limit and plasticity index about 30 and 10 percent respectively.
