Application of Hazard and Operability Study Method to Evaluate Environmental Risk of Incinerator in a Sulphur Recovery Unit abstract
Hazard and Operability study (HAZOP) is the most widely used methodology that is used nowadays in the world as a tool for hazards identification. The sulphur recovery unit (SRU) is one of the most important parts of gas purification process where the acid gas converted to sulphur by the Claus process. The tail gas goes to incinerator where the H2S and sulphur vapour are oxidized to SO2. This paper presents a safety analysis for incinerator using HAZOP procedure. All of the deviations were considered by HAZOP team and the recommendations were suggested to reduce the likelihood of consequences that mostly were related to the environmental risk. The highest calculated risk level related to decrease temperature of incinerator due to lack of sufficient air or duty which can contaminates environment. The results demonstrate that any deviation in operation of SRU plant has a severe effect on the environment
