Natural dyeing of wool with Quercetin and Optimizing the Factors Affecting Dyeing Bath Using Central Composite Design abstract
Natural dyes have become a part of human life since time immemorial. In textile dyeing operations a re-introduction of natural dyes is of interest due to increased attention to water pollution, sustainability of raw materials and products, biodegradability and environmental aspects. Quercetin as a natural dye compound belongs to flavonoids family and consists of 3 rings and 5 hydroxyl groups, and taken from many fruits, flowers, and vegetables. The aim of this study is to evaluate exhaustion quantity regarding such various parameters of wool dyeing with quercetin as the effects of dye bath pH, salt concentration, dyeing time and temperature using a single component method complemented with the Central Composite Design. The optimal conditions obtained in this work were as follow: 5.5 for the dye bath pH, 12.5 g L-1 for the salt concentration, 70 min for the dyeing time and 85°C for the temperature. The results indicate that the wool dyed with quercetin enjoys a high stability.
