Large Scale Projects, Engineering Judgment Problems in Selection of the Geotechnical Parameters abstract

This article examines the difficulties of geotechnical and structural designers in the application of geotechnical parameters, obtained from laboratory tests and or in-situ tests that are prepared and reported by Geotechnical Consulting Engineers firms. The problem is more complex in large scale projects (especially in linear ones), when geotechnical studies are performed by several consulting firms in different locations of the site. Some data of laboratory test results, in-situ tests and also various number of design parameters that are selected, based on engineering judgments and finally some recommendations by the geotechnical consulting firms are presented. Furthermore, fundamental and basic points that should be considered in judgments and may have been neglected are also mentioned.
