Abstract:

Diabetes is an interference metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and proteins which can create as a result of shortage or absence of insulin .One of the most common chronic complications of diabetes is diabetic nephropathy or kidney disease which occurs in the body due to vascular disorders caused by elevated glucose levels and increase in BUN and Cr levels. diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication and decrease time and quality of life. Although its importance, no study has investigated this area .The present study was designed to evaluate the beneficial effects of oral administration of Hypericum perforatum (HP) on renal function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.Method and materials: In this experimental study, 32male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of : control, diabetic, control+HP and diabetic+HP. For diabetes induction, 60mg of STZ diluted in normal saline was injected intraperitoneally per kg of body weight. For 6 weeks, HPs were given orally to the treatment groups. The serum glucose level was evaluated by glucose oxidase enzyme method before the start of the experiment and at weeks 3 and 6 using spectrophotometric apparatus. Also, BUN and Cr were measured using special kits according to the guidelines. At the end, blood glucose, Cr And BUN were measured in all groups and their values were compared among the groups. The results were analyzed by SPSS 16 software using ANOVA and Tokey Test .Result: The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of BUN and Cr levels before the start of treatment (p> 0.05). Three weeks of treatment with RAI, however, reduced the relative severity of these two parameters compared to the diabetic group. But this difference was not statistically significant. However, after 6 weeks of treatment, serum creatinine level decreased significantly in diabetic rats compared to the control group (respectively p<0.01) and (p<0/05). At the end of treatment, at the 6th week, the level of BUN in the treatment-diabetic was significantly lower than the diabetic group (P<0.05). However, this decrease was not statistically significant in the two treatment groups compared to the control group (P> 0/05)Conclusions: In addition to the main drug, HP can have beneficial effects on the improvement of renal function in diabetic rats.
