Comparison of Antibacterial Activity of Three Endodontic Sealers against Enterococcus faecalis

Abstract:

Background and Objective: One of the most important features of endodontic sealers is antibacterial activity. In this study, this function was compared across three kinds of endodontic sealer (MTA-Fillapex, AH Plus and AH26). Method of Evaluation: This study is experimental. E.faecalis strain prepared by Pasteur Institute in Broth Hinton Muller culture medium. It was then cultivated in Agar blood culture medium (6h at 37℃.) 25 Blood Agar plates were prepared, in each of them 5 wells were devised. In 3 wells, three sealers were placed and Ampicillin was poured into the fourth well as the positive control group. Finally distilled water was poured into the fifth well as the negative group. Concurrently, ⅒ mL of the bacteria suspension with a concentration of 0.5 McFarland was cultivated on the plates, after 48 hours of incubation, the diameter of zone of inhibition (ZOI) around the well was measured by a ruler in terms of mm. In the end the obtained results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, fisher LSD, Fisher individual 95% CI. Findings: The result of our study revealed that AH26 sealers had the greatest antibacterial effect with the mean ZOI diameter of 16.55 mm. MTA-Fillapex was in the 2nd place with the mean ZOI diameter of 15.44 mm. Finally the weakest antibacterial features were related to AH Plus with the mean ZOI diameter of 10.2 mm. Conclusion: In this study, AH26 Sealer had greater antibacterial properties against the E.faecalis, compared to MTA-Fillapex and AH Plus.
