Evaluation by direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS) in clinical education abstract

Introduction: Clinical education is an integral part of the medical education program. In this regard, the supervision and evaluation of students in this period and the control of how they achieve clinical goals are facing problemes and challenges. DOPS is one of the evaluation methods in the workplace that focuses on the field of clinical skills.Methods: This study is a systematic review. The studies were selected using the key words of clinical evaluation, clinical education, clinical skills, and direct observation of procedural skills (DOPS) during the period 2000-2018 at the sites Google Scholar, PubMed, scopus, SID and magiran.Results: The original search found 180 articles. By studying the title and abstract of the articles, 30 papers were selected that survey the views of the students about this method. The most important strengths of this approach are improving student performance and clinical skills, Provide feedback after evaluation to students, satisfaction and active role in students education. The most important weaknesses of this method include time constraints, stressfulness and lack of cooperation of patient and personnel during the evaluation procedure.Conclusion: According to the results of the studies, this method has a positive effect on students performance and learning. Therefore, it is recommended that professors and instructors should use this method for clinical evaluation by facilitating barriers.
