Abstract:

As wind energy becomes a larger portion of the worlds energy portfolio and wind turbines become larger and more expensive, wind turbine control systems play an ever more prominent role in the design and deployment of wind turbines. The goals of traditional wind turbine control systems are maximizing energy production while protecting the wind turbine components. A multivariable control strategy based on model predictive control techniques for the control of variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbines is proposed. The whole operating region of wind turbine is divided into partial and full load regions. pitch control is used primarily to limit power in full load region. Particularly as turbines become larger, there is increasing interest in designing controllers to mitigate loads as far as possible. Torque control in variable speed turbines is used primarily to maximize energy capture in partial load region and to limit the torque above rated. A common challenge in both partial and full load regimes is the presence of nonlinearity in the system dynamics. In order to cope with nonlinearities, a multiple model predictive controller is suggested which provides acceptable performance throughout the whole operating region which is compared to existing strategies, PID and single model predictive controllers (SMPC), is performed. The proposed approach resultsin better power regulation. Index Terms—Multiple model control, Model predictive controller, Wind tubine modeling, Wind turbine control principals.
