Abstract:

Background and Aim : Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the persistent inability to achieve and then maintain an erection to permit satisfactory sexual intercourse. Different chronic diseases that occur in men can impair men s sexual function by erectile dysfunction and thus reduce their self-esteem, mental health and quality of life. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate chronic diseases that affect erectile function.Methods : Different databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched by MeSH keywords Erectile Dysfunction OR Male Sexual Impotence AND Chronic Disease OR Chronic illness OR Diabetes OR Epilepsy OR Hypertension OR Coronary Heart Disease OR Multiple sclerosis between 2009 to 2019. After reviewing articles, appropriate studies according to inclusion criteria were analyzed.Results : coronary artery disease (CAD) are closely linked with endothelial dysfunction, leading to restrictions in blood flow so it effects on erectile dysfunction(ED). The high prevalence of ED among chronic kidney disease patients was seen. The present study provides further confirmation that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a risk factor for erectile dysfunction. Chronic periodontal disease may be the linkage to ED. Type2 diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis(MS), hypertension, epilepsy and depression may have seen with ED. In some studies was seen drugs for chronic disease treatment such as epilepsy or hypertension is related to ED.Conclusion : Men who suffer from chronic illnesses, in addition to the suffering their disease, are also unhappy with their sexual life and this affects all aspects of their health, including mental health by affecting their quality of life - As the most important part of health - it affects so these men need special attention and by incorporating sexual health programs for men with chronic illnesses into their health plans can improve their health and quality of life.
