Every mobile robot — from warehouse robots to drones and humanoids — needs a portable energy source, and in practice that source is almost always a lithium-ion battery pack. Such a pack is more than a few cells: a complete system of cells, a battery management system (BMS), current and temperature sensors, balancing circuits, protection devices, and an enclosure, delivering reliable DC power to the computer, sensors, and motor drivers.

A lithium-ion cell has a narrow voltage window, typically 3.0 to 4.2 V per cell. Going outside it causes permanent capacity loss, internal short circuits, and even fire. The BMS's first job is therefore to monitor the voltage of every single cell: its analogue front end (AFE) measures each cell with an accuracy of about 5 mV. Chemistries differ, too: NMC offers high energy density and low weight for weight-sensitive robots, while lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is more stable and safer and is used in warehouse robots.

The BMS's second job is cell balancing. Cells are never perfectly identical, and over time their charge differences reduce the pack's total capacity. Passive balancing burns off the excess energy of fuller cells as heat, while active balancing transfers it to emptier cells; in some robotic systems, balancing current reaches 3 A per cell. The BMS also estimates the state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH), so the robot knows its remaining mission time and can return to a charger before the energy runs out.

The BMS protection layer reacts to over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short circuits, and excessive temperature, reducing power, issuing a warning, or disconnecting the battery output when conditions turn abnormal. Modern reference designs, such as NXP's MR-BMS771 for 7- to 14-cell packs, combine this protection with CAN, UAVCAN, I2C, and SMBus communication. Commercial products follow the same pattern: the 24 V LV-24V50 pack, with 1.2 kWh of energy and CANopen communication, is built for autonomous mobile robots and charges in about one hour.

Finally, the BMS is not the only safety layer; fuses, insulation, and mechanical protection are also required. Good power management means longer work, fewer stops, and a longer-lived battery.
