Commenting on Results in Medical Research Articles: a Qualitative Study

Many studies were conducted to study linguistic features and phraseology. According to Kanoksilapatham [1], moves help to meet the communicative purpose of a genre and provide better understanding. This study aimed to find the lexical bundles and formulaic expressions in the commenting on the results section of the discussion. For this purpose, 539 articles were selected randomly from Nature, Plos, the Lancent, and BMJ. All the texts were imported to AntConc software. Then identified clusters were analysed comprehensively for their functions based on the Yang and Allison’s [2] framework. The results showed that the medical article writers use a large number of lexical-bundles and specific clusters in order to comment on their findings. Familiarity with genre and typical word formation may help in better comprehension of texts. The study has pedagogical implications for students and specifically non-native writers. Therefore, linguistic features may be helpful in writing classes.
