Abstract:
In the selection of a new textbook, it is important to conduct an evaluation to ensure it is suitable. Being a powerful means of improving the quality of education, the role of evaluation has always been widely acknowledged. The purpose of this study is to investigate the appropriateness of the recently published English language textbooks (i.e. a new series of ELT textbooks - Prospects) in Iran mainly designed for EFL Junior Secondary Program students from the teachers’ perspectives. Over the course of the present study three distinct methods of textbook evaluation were integrated into one local evaluation checklist based on the underlying purposes of the study addressing 88 items related to eleven distinct dimensions covered by the textbooks. Based on the descriptive statistics results run in the study the teachers applying these textbooks were mostly in agreement with the appropriateness of the contents covered in them to the understanding level of their students; however, there seem to remain a couple of issues awaiting being drastically revised in the upcoming editions of these textbooks
