Abstract:

Nowadays global competition, customer's Continuous preference for receiving further value, safety limitations, pollution issues and etc., have forced firms to seek continuously better production practices. Undoubtedly Lean model, between two main production practices, is more preferable, both in production and humanity, than mass production. On the one hand it is a flexible system that leads to higher quality and lower cost and on the other hand, it considers continuous improvement and respect for people as two basic principles. As firms' interest for achieving the lean production has increased, various authors have offered different models in order to assess their efforts in relation to leanness. Anyway, their models have disregarded some aspects of the lean systems. In this article, we will offer a relatively comprehensive model for assessing the degree of leanness of manufacturing firms. For this purpose, we first review the lean production literature and, specially, existing models and afterwards we expose their weaknesses. Our model is then developed. Then leanness level of the Bahman Motor Company is evaluated by this model.
